800,000 electric bikes sold in EU in 2014

Bike Europe has reported on the numbers of electric bikes sold in the EU for 2013 with confident predictions of 800,000 for 2014. But this a small number compared with the 36 million electric bikes manufactured in China.

The largest EU market remains Germany where sales are expected to have increased from 410,000 in 2013 to 450,000 in 2014, with a high proportion manufactured in Germany. The figures for The Netherlands have increased by 9.4% to 192,000 and accounting for 45% of total sales value of the bicycle market. The next two largest markets are France and Italy with about 60,000 each.

Statistics for the UK remain a bit vague, but all agree that there was significant growth in 2014 to between 30,000 and 35,000, with very few manufactured in the UK.

The majority of the electric bikes manufactured in China are sold with lead acid batteries in the home market. But some companies specialise in export with the USA being one of their main markets. Virtually all the export bikes are fitted with Lithium Ion or Polymer batteries.

The 2014 Eurobike Show saw a much more widespread offering of electric mountain bikes and the prediction from the CEO of Bosh e-bikes that electric bikes in all their forms will eventually comprise 50% of the total bike market.

Personal service of the owner Peter Blackman and his staff. Many good quality Ebikes to see and try.
It’s an attractive bike so I feel good riding it. Having Power assist is so great as I switch power on when I am struggling up hill. Without power assist, I would not have a bike to be able to enjoy our countryside
The staff assisting us were very helpful - allowing us plenty of time to compare the wide range of options, and trying out several models in the forecourt / service road. We ended up buying two models - the one we intended to buy for myself (Exmoor) AND one for my husband (Hunter). The electrical assistance cuts in only when you feel you need it, and that means we can enjoy cycling again: we had found the hills of Devon too much of a challenge, after moving here from SE London, on an ordinary push-bike. Really pleased with the whole experience, and the bikes.
